The 2025 Technology Impact Report examines a pivotal moment of global digital infrastructure as numerous technologies converge into an integrated system, what we could call, “cognitive infrastructure”. Despite broad recognition of the potential of these technologies, a significant readiness gap remains, posing challenges to scalability, integration, and security.
The report explores the implications of this shift, analyzing how technological capability will shape geopolitical influence, economic structures, and human agency, while urging organizations to bridge this gap to ensure a future of collaboration and innovation.
The Trends Shaping the Future
AI’s influence extends into geopolitics, with 82% believing that disparities in AI capabilities could lead to new forms of global competition. Yet, 74% also see AI as a powerful tool for international collaboration on global challenges. This duality – AI as both a competitive edge and a collaborative tool – underscores the complexity of its future role.
Survey data reveals that 86% of respondents believe AI will have a significant impact on global digital infrastructure over the next decade, with 52% stating that its impact will be “extremely significant.”
Yet, when asked about their organization’s current AI preparedness, the answers tell a different story. Only 28% of respondents feel data centers are fully equipped to handle the growing computational demands of AI, while 48% report being only “somewhat prepared.”
From data centers to governance and skills, gaps remain that could slow progress. However, the promise of AI is within reach. With focused efforts on preparing systems and teams, organizations can bridge the readiness gap and unlock the full value AI has to offer.
APIs quietly enable the systems that power our modern world, facilitating the smooth exchange of data and services. As digital networks expand, APIs play a crucial role in ensuring that platforms and applications work seamlessly together. It’s no surprise that 58% of respondents believe APIs should be recognized as part of critical infrastructure, given their essential role in keeping digital systems connected.
With 87% of respondents identifying AI integration as a top priority for API management in the coming years, organizations must focus on improving their platforms and processes. Strengthening API management now will help reduce disruptions and support the growing complexity of digital systems.
From AI-specific security measures to distributed system support, organizations must address these issues to future-proof their digital infrastructure. Tackling these gaps will be essential for building secure, scalable, and innovative systems capable of supporting next-generation technologies.
